e-CASES: Normal diameters of lumbar central canal on CT and MR
AP diameter and midsagittal diameter of lumbar central canal:
- Normal >13 mm
- AP diameter 10-13mm = “relative stenosis”
- AP diameter <10mm = “absolute stenosis”
Thecal sac transverse diameter:
- Normally 16-18mm
- Stenosis < 15 mm
Cross-sectional area normally >100mm²
- 76-100mm² = moderate stenosis
- ≤75mm² = severe stenosis
Lateral recess (subarticular or entrance zone)
Narrowest at superior border of pedicle :
- > 5mm in height
- 3-5mm “relative stenosis”
