定义
中间外侧核是位于脊髓侧角内的神经元胞体聚集体，纵跨T1至L2节段，在自主神经系统中发挥关键作用。该神经核发出节前交感传出神经元，投射至位于脊柱两侧的交感神经链神经节。在交感神经链内，这些节前神经元或在某一神经节处直接形成突触，或沿神经链上行或下行，与颈部或骶部神经节形成突触，从而分别支配颈部或盆腔区域。
需要特别指出的是，脊髓的侧角是外侧中间质（即第七层）向外侧突出所形成的结构，仅见于胸段和腰段上部脊髓节段（T1至L2）。因此，中间外侧核并不贯穿脊髓全长，这是由于在上述节段范围以外的区域侧角并不存在。
