Apex of petrous part
Apex partis petrosae
- Latin synonym: Apex pyramidis
Definition
The apex of petrous part is rough and uneven. It points medially, unlike the base of the wedge-shaped petrous bone, which extends outward and backward. The apex nestles into the angle formed by the posterior border of the greater wing of the sphenoid and the basilar part of the occipital bone. It contains the anterior or internal opening of the carotid canal, and constitutes the postero-lateral boundary of the foramen lacerum.
