Basion

Basion

Definition

Basion is located at the middle of the front edge of the foramen magnum. This specific point is an important craniometric landmark used in radiological measurements of the skull to identify conditions such as basilar invagination and atlanto-occipital dissociation.

Additionally, basion acts as the point of connection for the apical ligament of dens. The ligament stretches from the top of the dens or odontoid process in the second cervical vertebrae and extends upward to attach to the front edge of the foramen magnum at the basion.
