Definition

The navicular bone is a boat-shaped intermediate tarsal bone located on the inner side of the foot. It articulates with the talus (at the back), the three cuneiforms (at the front), and the cuboid bone (on the outer side).

The inner surface of the navicular bone has a rounded tuberosity that, together with the medial cuneiform bone, serves as the point of insertion for the tendon of the tibialis posterior muscle.

The navicular bone provides attachment points for various ligaments in the foot, including the spring ligament (or plantar calcaneonavicular ligament) on the plantar surface, the calcaneonavicular part of the bifurcate ligament on the lateral surface, and additional ligaments on the dorsal surface, such as the talonavicular, cuneonavicular, and cuboidonavicular ligaments.
