Neck of talus

Collum ossis tali

  • Latin synonym: Collum tali

Definition

The neck of talus refers to the narrow region between the head and the body of the talus. It slopes downward, forward, and medially.

The distal dorsal surface of the neck attaches to the ankle joint’s capsular ligament. The proximal half lies within the joint cavity, while the distal half is outside of it.

The lateral aspect of the neck of talus attaches to the anterior talofibular ligament, a sub-section of the ankle’s lateral ligament.

The inferior surface of the talus’ neck has a deep bony groove called the sulcus tali (or tarsal sulcus). This groove runs diagonally sideways and widens toward the front. The calcaneum has a corresponding groove called the sulcus calcanei, situated directly below the sulcus tali. These two grooves combine to form a space called the sinus tarsi or tarsal canal. The interosseus talocalcaneal ligament, located inside the tarsal canal, attaches to the inferior surface.
