Posterior process of talus

Processus posterior ossis tali

  • Latin synonym: Processus posterior tali
  • Related terms: Posterior process

Definition

The talus has a bony projection known as the posterior process of talus located at the back of its body. This process consists of a lateral and medial tubercle, enclosing a groove for the flexor hallucis longus tendon. The posterior process serves as an attachment site for both the lateral and medial (deltoid) ligaments of the ankle joint. These ligaments include the posterior tibiotalar ligament (part of the medial deltoid ligament) that connects the medial malleolus to the medial tubercle of the talus, and the posterior talofibular ligament (part of the lateral ligament) that connects the lateral malleolus to the upper section of the posterior process.
