Lacus lacrimalis
Lacus lacrimalis
- Synonym: Lacrimal lake
- Related terms: Lacus lacrimalis; Lacrimal lake
Definition
The lacus lacrimalis (a.k.a. the lacrimal lake) is a small triangular reservoir of tears located at the medial canthus of the eye. It lies between the medial ends of the upper and lower eyelids and surrounds the lacrimal caruncle. The volume of the lacrimal lake is approximately 7-10 µL.
Contents
The lacus lacrimalis contains the lacrimal papillae, lacrimal puncta, lacrimal caruncle, and plica semilunaris.
Function
The lacus lacrimalis acts as a temporary reservoir for tears before they enter the lacrimal puncta.
It facilitates drainage of tears into the lacrimal canaliculi and subsequently the lacrimal drainage system.
Contributes to maintenance of tear film distribution across the ocular surface.
Clinical correlates
Excess accumulation of tears within the lacus lacrimalis may occur in epiphora due to impaired lacrimal drainage.
Debris, mucus, or inflammatory secretions may collect in this region in conjunctivitis or lacrimal drainage obstruction.
Abnormalities of the puncta or medial canthus can disrupt normal tear drainage and ocular surface homeostasis.
