Posterior basal segmental artery of right lung

Arteria segmentalis basalis posterior pulmonis dextri

  • Numbering: A10

Definition

Antoine Micheau

The posterior basal segmental artery of the right lung (A10) is a branch of the right inferior pulmonary artery (part of the basal trunk) that supplies the posterior basal segment (S10) of the right lower lobe.

Anatomical Details

The pulmonary arterial system follows the bronchial tree. The right pulmonary artery divides into branches that correspond to the lobes and segments of the right lung. Within the right lower lobe, the basal trunk (or inferior pulmonary artery) gives rise to several segmental arteries, including:

  • A6 Superior segmental artery (apical segment of the lower lobe)

  • A7 Medial basal segmental artery

  • A8 Anterior basal segmental artery

  • A9 Lateral basal segmental artery

  • A10 Posterior basal segmental artery

The posterior basal segmental artery (A10) is typically the most posterior and inferior of the basal segmental branches. It courses posteriorly and inferiorly alongside the posterior basal segmental bronchus (B10) to supply the posterior basal segment, which lies against the posterior chest wall and the diaphragm.
