The short association fibres are cortico-cortical white-matter fibres that primarily provide local connections between adjacent or nearby cortical areas of the same cerebral hemisphere. They form the superficial component of a wider association-fibre system in which cortical regions are interconnected over different distances.

Thus, association fibres can be understood broadly as ranging from short, local connections to long association fasciculi connecting widely separated cortical regions.
