Anatomy atlas of the ear

Anatomy atlas of the ear

Introduction

This e-Anatomy module contains illustrations dedicated to the anatomy of the external, middle and internal ear. These fully labeled anatomical illustrations are presented as a comprehensive atlas of the auditory and vestibular system. This atlas is specifically designed for medical students, ENT residents and healthcare professionals.

Frontal cross section of the ear: external, middle and internal ear.

Material and methods

Sixty-seven unique medical illustrations have been created, depicting the auricle, external acoustic meatus, tympanic membrane, tympanic cavity, auditory ossicles, auditory tube, and also the bony labyrinth, the membranous labyrinth or the cochlea and the spiral organ.

These anatomical illustrations were done by Marjorie Champarou, scientific illustrator, under the anatomical and scientific supervision of Antoine Micheau M.D. and Denis Hoa M.D. (Radiologists - Montpellier, France).
The otoscopy images in this atlas were provided by Pierre Vironneau M.D. (ENT Surgeon - Montpellier, France).

The anatomical structures were labeled, following the Terminologia Anatomica 1 and 2, and grouped by topics:

  • General anatomy
  • Auricle
  • Cartilages of ear
  • Temporal bone
  • Auditory ossicles
  • Joints of auditory ossicles
  • Ligaments
  • Muscles
  • Tympanic membrane
  • Tympanic cavity
  • Auditory tube
  • Bony labyrinth
  • Membranous labyrinth
  • Arteries
  • Veins
  • Lymph nodes
  • Nerves
