The sternothyroid muscle separates from the sternohyoid in the middle of the neck and inserts on the thyroid cartilage of the larynx.It is covered in the neck by the sternocephalic, and covers more of the lateral surface of the trachea.

Origin: first costal cartilage

Insertion: thyroid cartilage

Action: draw the hyoid apparatus, larynx and tongue caudally

Nerve: ventral branches of cervical nerves
