中耳は、耳管、乳突蜂巣、および鼓室から構成される。
中耳は側頭骨内に存在する不規則な形態を呈し、外側方向に扁平化した空間である。空気で満たされており、その空気は耳管を通じて咽頭鼻部から導かれる。中耳内には可動性の骨の連鎖が存在し、外側壁と迷路壁とを連結するとともに、鼓膜に伝達された振動を鼓室を横断して内耳へと伝える機能を果たす。
