三叉神経脊髄路核の中間亜核は、同核の中央部に位置し、その上方にある口側亜核と下方にある尾側亜核との間に介在する。本亜核は、顔面の外側部、すなわち口腔および鼻腔領域の外側に相当する部位からの痛覚および温度覚情報の受容を担うが、頬部および顎部領域には及ばない。
