정의
막뼈 (membrane bone)는 연골 중간 단계 없이 직접적인 뼈 형성 과정인 막내골화를 통해 형성되는 뼈를 말하며, 주로 두개골 뼈와 빗장뼈와 같은 납작뼈에서 나타납니다.
뼈의 막부분은 뼈막에 해당하며, 막뼈와 혼동해서는 안 됩니다.
막뼈는 막내골화라고 불리는 과정을 통해 형성됩니다. 연골 전구체를 포함하는 연골내골화와 달리, 막내골화는 연골 단계 없이 간엽 조직 내에서 직접 일어납니다. 막내골화 과정에서 간엽세포는 뼈모세포로 직접 분화하며, 뼈모세포는 유골을 분비하기 시작합니다. 이후 유골이 무기질화되어 뼈를 형성합니다.
