Acetabular margin

Margo acetabuli

  • Latin synonym: Limbus acetabuli

Definition

The boundary of the acetabulum is known as the acetabular margin. This cup-shaped socket is deep and hemispherical, located on the lateral surface of the hip bone. It articulates with the head of the femur, forming the hip joint.

The acetabular margin lacks inferiorly, resulting in the formation of a notch referred to as the acetabular notch. However, this gap is filled by the transverse acetabular ligament. The margins are further elevated by the acetabular labrum, a fibrocartilaginous rim that extends along the boundary of the acetabulum. The labrum enhances stability in the hip joint by deepening the acetabular cavity and limiting the range of motion.
