Anterior border of fibula

Margo anterior fibulae

  • Synonym: Anterior margin of fibula
  • Related terms: Anterior border

Definition

The anterior border of fibula starts near the front of the fibula's head and runs down along the shaft. It provides attachment to the anterior intermuscular septum.

As it reaches the lower end of the fibula, the anterior border curves slightly outward (or laterally) and divides, forming an elongated triangular area just above the lateral malleolus. The lower part of the front edge of the triangle attaches to the superior extensor retinaculum, while the lower part of the back edge attaches to the superior peroneal retinaculum.

Kindly note that in the old four-border four-surface naming system for the fibula, the anterior border corresponds to the anterolateral border. For more information, please consult the specifics regarding the body of the fibula.
