Central sulcus of insula

Sulcus centralis insulae

Definition

The central sulcus of insula extends from the apex to the base. The base, in this case, refers to the part of the peri-insular circular sulcus that stretches from the anterior to the posterior insular points. On the outer side of the insular cortex, the central sulcus continues as the central sulcus on the brain’s lateral surface, positioned between the pre- and post-central gyri.

Inside the insula, the central sulcus divides it into three short gyri (anterior, middle, and posterior) located in front of the central sulcus. Behind the central sulcus of the insular cortex, there are two long gyri (anterior and posterior).
