Cuboid bone

Os cuboideum

  • Related terms: Cuboid

Definition

The cube-shaped cuboid bone is located on the outer side of the foot, articulating with the calcaneus posteriorly and the fourth and fifth metatarsals anteriorly. It connects with the navicular and lateral cuneiform bones medially.

The plantar surface of the cuboid bone has an oblique bony groove housing the tendon of the peroneus longus muscle, which runs from the lateral to medial side of the foot. The plantar surface also attaches to the long and short plantar ligaments and receives insertion from the tibialis posterior tendon. The medial surface of the bone serves as an attachment site for the lateral limb of the bifurcate ligament (the calcaneocuboid ligament) in the foot.
