Falx cerebelli

Falx cerebelli

  • Synonym: Cerebellar falx
  • Related terms: Falx cerebelli; Cerebellar falx

Definition

The falx cerebelli is a midline fold of the dura mater, which is situated between the two hemispheres of the cerebellum. The dura, along with the arachnoid mater, covers the entire brain, making it hard to see the grooves and folds on the surface of the cerebral hemisphere. However, in certain areas, the inner/meningeal layer of the dura mater separates from the outer periosteal layer and extends into the brain, creating folds or partitions that support different brain regions.

One of these dural partitions is the falx cerebelli, which is located inside the posterior cranial fossa. It connects to the occipital bone along its posterior edge, and to the tentorium cerebelli along its superior edge. The anterior edge is not attached to anything.

The falx cerebelli has important venous sinuses along its edges, including the straight sinus where it meets the tentorium cerebelli at the top, and the occipital sinus along the posterior edge.

Apart from the falx cerebelli, other important dural partitions in the brain include the falx cerebri, the tentorium cerebelli, and the diaphragma sellae.
