Frontal operculum

Operculum frontale

Definition

The frontal operculum is a specific area of the cortex found between the anterior horizontal and ascending rami of the lateral sulcus. It is part of the inferior frontal gyrus and contributes to the upper lip of the lateral sulcus, which hangs over the insular cortex.

Please note that there is another cortical operculum called the orbital operculum, located beneath the anterior horizontal ramus of the lateral sulcus. Some consider it to be a part of the frontal operculum, and it also belongs to the inferior frontal gyrus. Both the orbital and the frontal opercula are associated with Broca's motor speech area.

Other important cortical opercula that cover the insular cortex include the fronto-parietal and temporal opercula.
