Gluteal fold

Sulcus gluteus

  • Latin synonym: Sulcus glutealis

Definition

The gluteal fold is the term used to describe the horizontal skin crease that forms below the buttocks, separating the upper thigh from the buttocks.

It’s important not to mistake the transverse gluteal fold for the lower border of the gluteus maximus muscle. The gluteal fold is formed by the fibrous attachment of the gluteal skin to the deep fascia, while the lower border of the gluteus maximus muscle lies deeper and crosses the gluteal fold diagonally downward and outward.
