Greater palatine groove of maxilla

Sulcus palatinus major maxillae

  • Related terms: Greater palatine groove; Greater palatine groove (Maxilla)

Definition

The greater palatine groove of maxilla traverses the surface for articulation with the perpendicular part of the palatine bone on the nasal surface of maxilla.

It begins near the middle of the posterior border and runs obliquely downward and forward; the groove is converted into a canal, the pterygopalatine canal (transmission of the greater palatine nerve and the descending palatine artery), by the palatine bone.
