Iliac tuberosity

Tuberositas iliaca

Definition

The iliac tuberosity is the upper-thickened, rough portion of the sacropelvic surface of the ilium. It is situated directly below the inner lip of the dorsal segment of the iliac crest. The auricular part of the sacropelvic surface of the ilium is positioned anteroinferior to the iliac tuberosity, forming the articulation with the sacrum to create the sacroiliac joint.

Important ligaments connecting the iliac tuberosity to the sacrum include the interosseus sacroiliac ligament, which is attached along its major part. Posteriorly, the dorsal (or posterior) sacroiliac ligament can be found superior to the interosseus ligament, while the anterosuperior region is occupied by the iliolumbar ligament.
