Inferior articular surface of tibia

Facies articularis inferior tibiae

  • Related terms: Inferior articular surface

Definition

The lower end of the tibia features an undersurface known as the inferior articular surface of tibia. It exhibits a concave contour, wider anteriorly than posteriorly. This surface establishes a joint connection with the superior articular surface of the trochlea of talus, thus playing a role in the formation of the ankle joint. Furthermore, the inferior articular surface of tibia extends downward along the lateral aspect of the medial malleolus. The edges of the tibia's inferior articular surface serve as attachment points for the ankle joint capsule.
