Inferior gluteal line

Linea glutea inferior

Definition

The inferior gluteal line is a bony ridge located on the external or gluteal surface of the ilium. It extends backward from the area just behind the anterior inferior iliac spine and continues posteriorly above the acetabulum until it reaches near the apex of the greater sciatic notch.

The gluteal surface of ilium also features two additional gluteal lines: the anterior and posterior gluteal lines.

Originating from the gluteal surface of the ilium, along the inferior gluteal line, are two important muscles:

  • The gluteus minimus muscle originates from the area above the inferior gluteal line, between inferior and anterior gluteal lines

  • The reflected head of the rectus femoris muscle, an anterior thigh muscle, originates beneath the inferior gluteal line, just above the acetabulum.
