Inner lip of iliac crest

Labium internum cristae iliacae

  • Related terms: Inner lip

Definition

The inner lip of the iliac crest corresponds to the medial portion of the ventral (anterior 2/3rd) segment of the iliac crest, situated medial to the intermediate zone.

In general, the hip bone's iliac crest can be divided into ventral (anterior 2/3rd) and dorsal (posterior 1/3rd) segments. The ventral segment is further divided into three longitudinal regions:

  • The inner lip of the iliac crest

  • The outer lip of the iliac crest

  • The intermediate zone, which is located between the inner and outer lips.

The inner lip of the iliac crest provides attachment to the transversus abdominis muscle, transversalis and iliacus fascia anteriorly, and the quadratus lumborum and thoracolumbar fascia posteriorly.
