Knee region

Regio genualis

  • Latin synonym: Regio genus

Definition

The knee region is located between the thigh and the leg, and it encompasses a synovial joint known as the knee joint. For specific information about the bony articulations, surrounding capsule, supporting ligaments (cruciate, collateral, and menisci), protective bursae, and movements of the knee joint, please refer to the description of the knee. In the anterior region of the knee, there is a prominent quadriceps tendon that houses the body’s largest sesamoid bone, known as the patella. More details can be found here: anterior region of knee.

The posterior region of the knee features a shallow, diamond-shaped area referred to as the popliteal fossa. For additional information, please refer to the provided link: popliteal fossa.
