Facies lateralis tibiae

  • Related terms: Lateral surface

Definition

The lateral surface of tibia refers to its outer side, located between the anterior and lateral (interosseus) borders. The upper two-thirds of this surface serves as the site of origin for the tibialis anterior muscle. The lower third of the lateral surface of tibia forms a smoothly curved region that gradually extends to the anterior aspect of the bone. Arranged in sequential order from the medial side, the tendons of the tibialis anterior, extensor hallucis longus, and extensor digitorum longus overlap this area.
