Facies lateralis fibulae

  • Related terms: Lateral surface

Definition

The lateral surface of fibula is positioned between the anterior and posterior borders and provides attachment for the peroneal muscles, namely the peroneus longus and peroneus brevis. The peroneus longus muscle originates from the upper one-third and posterior part of the middle one-third of the lateral surface of fibula, while the remaining segment of the lateral surface, comprising the anterior half of the middle one-third and the entire lower one-third, serves as the origin of the peroneus brevis muscle.

Please be aware that in the previous naming system, which utilized four borders and four surfaces for the fibula, the lateral surface is equivalent to the region situated between the anterolateral and posterolateral borders of the fibula. For additional details, please refer to the specific information regarding the fibula’s body.
