Malleolar fossa

Fossa malleoli lateralis

Definition

The malleolar fossa is a depressed area situated on the posterior aspect of the inner surface of the fibula’s lateral malleolus. It provides attachment for the posterior talofibular ligament below and an inferior transverse tibiofibular ligament above.

On the anterior part of the same inner surface, there is a flat triangular region that articulates with the corresponding surface of the talus, contributing to the formation of the ankle joint.
