  • Latin synonym: Os cuneiforme primum
  • Synonym: First cuneiform, Cuneiform 1
  • Related terms: Medial cuneiform

Definition

There are 3 cuneiform bones in the foot's tarsal region. They articulate with the navicular bone at the back. The largest among them is the medial cuneiform bone. It connects distally with the first metatarsal bone, laterally with the intermediate cuneiform, and the base of the second metatarsal bone. The medial cuneiform bone, along with the navicular tuberosity, serves as the insertion site for the tendon of the tibialis posterior muscle. It also serves as the insertion site for the tendon of the tibialis anterior muscle, along with the first metatarsal. The plantar surfaces of all three cuneiform bones receive additional slips from the tibialis posterior tendon.
