Medial malleolus

Malleolus medialis

Definition

The medial malleolus is a bony projection that extends downward from the medial surface of the lower end of the tibia, forming a visible prominence at the inner aspect of the ankle.

On the lateral side of the medial malleolus, there is an articular facet that is an extension of the inferior articular surface of tibia. It articulates with the trochlear surface of the talus, contributing to the formation of the ankle joint.

The primary ligament on the inner side of the ankle, also known as the deltoid ligament (or medial ligament), connects the lower part of the medial malleolus to various bones in the foot, including the talus, calcaneum and navicular bones.
