Spina iliaca posterior inferior

Definition

The posterior inferior iliac spine is a notable bony protuberance located on the posterior border of the iliac portion of the hip bone, below the posterior superior iliac spine. The area beneath the posterior inferior iliac spine is characterized by the presence of the greater sciatic notch.

Certain fibers of the piriformis muscle originate from the posterior inferior iliac spine and the upper edge of the greater sciatic notch.
