Precentral sulcus

Sulcus precentralis

  • Latin synonym: Sulcus praecentralis

Definition

Precentral sulcus is a prominent sulcus found in the frontal lobe of the brain. It starts from the upper edge of the cerebral hemisphere and travels diagonally downwards and forwards on the outer surface. This sulcus is positioned parallel to the central sulcus that lies behind it. Together, they enclose an area known as the precentral gyrus, which contains the regions responsible for controlling voluntary muscle movements in the body.

The precentral sulcus also extends on the inner side of the brain from the upper edge of the hemisphere. Here, it acts as the front boundary of the paracentral lobule, which is referred to as the paracentral sulcus.
