Supramarginal gyrus

Gyrus supramarginalis

Definition

Supramarginal gyrus is an important cerebral gyrus located on the side of the cerebral hemisphere. It has a U-shaped structure and surrounds the posterior ramus of the lateral sulcus, which includes the inferior parietal lobule and part of the superior temporal gyrus. The Wernicke's sensory speech area, which is primarily located in the posterior part of the superior temporal gyrus, is part of the supramarginal gyrus. Consequently, if there is a stroke in the dominant hemisphere (the left hemisphere), involving the supramarginal gyrus, it can result in sensory or receptive aphasia.
