Understanding the needs and expectations of radiological anatomy students: how does the choice of electronic resources in academic libraries play a key role in enhancing teaching and facilitating learning?

Medical studies are specific: the volume of learning is very intense and requires a significant and regular investment. It is therefore essential to have adapted and didactic tools that enable to increase learning, especially in anatomy and radiology (learning radioanatomy: update teaching with interactive tools).

The company IMAIOS was born from exactly this idea: create a didactic tool that the founders, Denis Hoa and Antoine Micheau, were missing. Both radiologists, they recognize that anatomy, and more specifically radio-anatomy, is difficult to understand on paper atlases.
In many ways, radiology is an application of anatomy. Learn what normal anatomy looks like - and its variations - so you can identify when something is wrong. Focus on understanding the findings on a healthy subject and how they look on each modality.
For future radiologists, it is essential to emphasize the correlation between purely anatomical diagrams and cross-sectional medical images, whether they are X-rays, CT scans or even MRIs. The difficulty lies in remembering many anatomical structures that are sometimes difficult to visualize. This is where it is important to concretize and understand each anatomical structure and how it works. It is clearly necessary to learn to transpose schematic anatomy on different and very thin sections before being able to recognize healthy subjects and pathologies.
The interpretation of medical images obviously requires a great deal of experience, this specialty has a very broad scope since it touches all areas of medicine and surgery.

It is also interesting to keep in mind that millennial learners are ‘‘digital natives,’’ having had technology at their fingertips since birth. They possess unique skills on how to find information quickly and consequently tend to expect an immediate response to any query or concern, often relying on the Internet to obtain answers or closure to a question, and use technology to communicate with friends and colleagues. This expectation for immediate answers results in impatience, a relatively short attention span (which can quickly lead to boredom), and a relative inability to perform deep critical thinking. Because millennial learners tend to be visual learners, limiting text and incorporating multiple images and/or videos
can aid in retention of the material [1].

For many years, the IMAIOS anatomy atlases have generated interest from the world's leading universities:

e-Anatomy is available on the web and mobile (Android and iOS), making it a highly searchable tool. A study pointed out that access to an online atlas significantly increases the learning and anatomical knowledge of interns [2].
Functions have been developed specifically for teaching purposes and thus facilitate the integration of educational resources into courses.
Usage statistics are available in the COUNTER 5 standard.
