背外側前頭前皮質について具体的に述べると、同部位は純粋に論理的な機能に特化したサブ領域であり、問題解決および／または複雑な意思決定のために一時的な情報の保持と操作を担うワーキングメモリに特に深く関与している。
また、注意、集中、および衝動制御を調節しており、遂行機能ならびに論理的問題解決に不可欠な役割を果たす。このことから、同部位の処理に帰せられる複雑性のレベルはきわめて高い。すなわち、その論理的連鎖に関与する各側面は複数のシステムによって登録された刺激を包含しており、意思決定への関与もまた、特定の行動として実行されるべき一連のカスケード状の事象を伴うものである。
