Definition
Dermal ridges, also known as epidermal ridges or friction ridges, are the raised lines and patterns found on the surface of the skin of the fingers, palms, toes, and soles. These ridges are formed by the folding of the epidermis into the underlying dermis and are arranged in characteristic patterns — loops, whorls, and arches — that are unique to each individual.
