Facial nerve [Intermediofacial nerve]
Nervus facialis [nervus intermedio-facialis]
- Latin synonyms: Nervus facialis [VII]
- Synonyms: Facial nerve [VII], Intermediofacial nerve
- Numbering: VII
Definition
The facial nerve (VII) is a mixed cranial nerve that provides motor innervation to the superficial muscles of the head, face, and external ear, carries taste fibers from the palate and rostral two thirds of the tongue, and contains parasympathetic fibers supplying several lacrimal and salivary glands.
Number : VII
Sensory, motor, or both : both
Origin : motor fibers arise from the facial motor nucleus in the ventrolateral part of the rostral medulla oblongata; parasympathetic fibers arise from the parasympathetic nucleus of the facial nerve.
Route / Reports : the nerve emerges from the medulla through the trapezoid body, just medial to the cochlear nuclei. The intermediate nerve joins the motor root shortly after emergence. The facial nerve then leaves the cranial cavity through the internal acoustic meatus with the vestibulocochlear nerve, enters the facial canal of the petrous temporal bone, and finally exits the skull through the stylomastoid foramen.
Distribution : superficial muscles of the head, face, and external ear; caudal belly of the digastricus, stapedius, stylohyoideus, and platysma muscles. It also carries taste from the palate and rostral two thirds of the tongue and parasympathetic fibers to the lacrimal, mandibular, sublingual, nasal, buccal, and lingual glands.
Description : The facial nerve originates in the rostral medulla, emerges through the trapezoid body, and joins with its intermediate nerve component. It then enters the internal acoustic meatus alongside the vestibulocochlear nerve, travels through the facial canal within the petrous temporal bone, and exits through the stylomastoid foramen before dividing into branches that supply the muscles of facial expression and other structures of the head.
