Definition
The pons is the ventral component of the metencephalon and forms part of the brainstem. It is located between the medulla oblongata caudally and the midbrain rostrally, ventral to the cerebellum. It comprises a ventral portion containing the pontine nuclei and transverse pontine fibres, and a dorsal tegmental portion associated with the rostral part of the fourth ventricle. The transverse pontine fibres continue laterally into the middle cerebellar peduncles, thereby connecting the pons with the cerebellum. The trigeminal nerve emerges from the lateral aspect of the pons.
