定義
小腸の輪筋層は、小腸の外筋層の内側構成要素である。腸管腔を取り囲むように輪状に配列した平滑筋線維から構成される。この筋層の収縮により腸管腔が狭窄し、分節運動および蠕動運動において主要な役割を果たすことで、腸内容物の混和と推進を促進する。
特定の部位では、輪筋が肥厚して括約筋を形成する。その例として、回腸と盲腸の接合部における回盲括約筋が挙げられる。輪筋層の活動は、輪筋層と縦筋層の間に位置する腸管筋層間（アウエルバッハ）神経叢によって調節される。
